A Family Tradition
For over 120 years, working with stone has been a family tradition. When 18-year-old Antoni Socinski arrived from Poland at the end of the 19th century, he went to work in the Vermont marble quarry in West Rutland, helping to bring the big blocks out of the quarry. He passed his strong European work ethic and his dreams for a better life on to his children, and his son Adam followed in his footsteps for a time in the West Rutland quarry. After World War II, Adam’s entrepreneurial spirit inspired him to start his own business, selling marble and granite monuments, and eventually he converted a barn into a sandblasting shop where he and his sons (now grown) could transform his artistic drawings into carvings and lettering on individual and family memorials.
With the third generation, the idea of using stone as a building material for kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces in general was born. All of Adam’s sons have been involved in stonework, both in manufacturing memorials and in fabricating stone for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities and tub surrounds, fireplace facings, natural stone tile floors, and more. The quality of their work is second to none, and they are well known throughout the stone industry.
Adam’s oldest son, Anthony Socinski, followed in his father’s footsteps, working in a West Rutland white marble quarry and eventually starting his own business in Swanton, Vermont. Later he moved his family and the business to Route 7 in South Burlington, where he converted a garage into a sandblasting shop and began buying blocks and slabs of granite directly from the quarries. Custom cutting and finishing of stones enabled Anthony and his family to provide customers with shapes, designs, and artwork that were unique and special. Anthony’s five children learned from a young age of the beauty and artistic possibilities that came from working with stone.
As they matured, Anthony’s sons and daughters helped out in the family business, and some of them, including daughter Anita, were educated through the Stone Trades program at Spaulding High School in Barre, Vermont, where they developed and honed their cutting, polishing, and carving skills. They put these skills to work in the family business which grew and expanded to include a location on Williston Road in South Burlington and wholesale customers as distant as Ogdensburg, New York.
The use of natural stone—marble, granite, limestone, soapstone, and slate—for building applications has grown in popularity, and Anita and her family have grown with the trend. Over the past 25 years, Anita has nurtured her passion and talent for working with stone, creating beautiful natural stone treatments for kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, and patios.
